THE
BURN CAMP BUZZ |
Mark your calendars now –The Central Virginia Burn Camp 2001
will be held from Sunday June 17th – Friday June 22nd.
|
A Note from the Camp Directors The warm sunny weather of Camp 2000 is
just a fond memory as we are in the middle of a winter cold spell – but
we hope that the great memories of camp will help to warm your spirits and
get you thinking about Camp 2001. We would like to thank everyone who
helped make Camp 2000 such a great success.
All the counselors and volunteers who gave their time, love and
energy helped to make this one of the best years ever. Also, thanks to the parents of campers
who sent their kids to this special camp, and to the kids themselves.
You laughed, made friends, learned, had fun and gained skills and
confidence. That’s what this camp is all about,
and we hope to see you back again this summer!
Love, Leslie, Sharon and Tim |

“Cultural Diversity in the new Millennium” - that was the theme from Camp 2000.
About 50
campers, counselors and volunteers spent the week of August 13th –
18th “traveling the
globe” to explore different cultures in addition to participating in regular,
fun camp activities. We “went”
to Africa and painted African masks and had an evening of African dance and
drumming. Many campers had the
opportunity to play drums along with the group. We went to Asia and ate Chinese
food with chopsticks. While “in” the Middle East we made our own
hieroglyphic nameplates and were treated to Middle Eastern dancers.
We highlighted Mexico by making pinatas and having Mexican food.
We had an
archeological dig and dug up ancient artifacts. We made clay pots, did woodworking, swam, did sporting
activities, swam, fished, canoed, went horseback riding, and swam.
There were team-building activities and opportunities to challenge
ourselves and gain self - confidence while at the high ropes course ( hey –
did you actually see Leslie on the Zip line this year !!).
We went tubing down the James River and were truly proud of all the
campers (and counselors) for participating!!
We listened
to the story-teller Jim Weiss, and renowned singer Terri Allard.
There was a wonderful band and singing around the campfire.
And of course, the highlight of the week was the Variety Show.
Who could forget “Hair on the Belly” ( you go, Garth), “Waz – A
– Bees”, “Chinese”, the
“6 O’Clock News”, “PYT”, “Sword Fighting”, and the “Cabin 3-A
Song” (which will soon become the CVBC Camp Song !).
Please
let us know your thoughts for next summer.
Call, write, fax or e-mail. We’d
love to hear from you!!
The International Association
of Firefighters sponsors a camp for 1 week each year. This camp is held in Washington, DC. Burn camps from across
the country are invited to send one of their teenage campers, along with a
firefighter, for a week of fun, touring and friendship.
This year, camper Brandon Gravesmill had the opportunity to attend this
camp, along with Henrico firefighter Bill Fulton.
Bill sent this report:
The
week of September 23rd – 29th, Brandon Gravesmill and I
flew from Norfolk to Washington DC to attend the IAFF Burn Camp.
We were greeted by two firefighters at the Dulles Airport and
driven then to the National 4H Center, where we met with other campers
and counselors from around the United States and Canada.
We threw the football and played volleyball until the other
campers and counselors arrived. Once
everyone arrived we had a mass meeting to get to know everyone and go over the
rules and plans for the week.
The
next 5 days started at 6 am and went until 11pm. We were touring something
different every hour of the day. We went to:
Fords Theater (where President Lincoln was shot), The Air and Space
Museum, The U.S. Congress, The Natural History Museum, The White House (where we
got to pet Socks the Presidents cat, and meet Buddy the Presidents dog). Ask
Brandon what we saw Buddy do on the front lawn, of the White House.
We
visited the Canadian Embassy, where the Canadians that were with us, got to meet
the Canadian Ambassador. We swam at the Naval Observatory (this is where the
President receives his medical care).
We
went to the Museum, which a museum dedicated to News, where Brandon and I taped
a “Live” news broadcast. We ate dinner at the Hard Rock Café, where Brandon
and I did the Macarena, while standing on top of our chairs, in the middle of
the restaurant. We went to one of
the Arlington Fire Station’s where we had a cookout, listened to a live D J,
danced once again, and sat on a helicopter that had landed on the front lawn at
the fire station. We went to a
Japanese steak house, where they cook the food right in front of you, doing all
kinds of tricks with the food, throwing the food on your plate and sometimes in
your lap.
The
evening before the day we were to leave, the sponsors held a banquet for
everyone. The banquet was filled with laughter and sadness, because we were all
leaving very soon.
The
most memorable experience I had all week, was listening to the campers tell the
fire fighters how much they appreciate the things we do for them!!!!
Can’t
wait to see everyone this year.
Love,
Bill Fulton
